Canadian immigration example hailed Wed 26 Oct 2005 10:23pm (UK)First Minister Jack McConnell has held out Canada as an example of the benefits to be gained from immigration.Talks in Ottawa had reinforced his belief in the need for Scotland's drive to attract fresh talent, he said.He was speaking as he continued his North American tour, which earlier this week took him to New York.From there he flew to Canada where he will meet the country's Prime Minister Paul Martin in Ottawa.Mr McConnell said: "I will be discussing a range of issues with him, including Scotland's relationship with Canada and also Canada's policy on immigration and the relationship of Canada's government with its provinces."On the first leg of his Canadian visit, he met the country's minister for intergovernmental affairs, Lucienne Robillard.He later said one of the lessons he took from the meeting was whatever a country's constitutional arrangements, these had to be based on mutual respect."I firmly believe that building mutual respect between Edinburgh and London is important for both the development of devolution and the long-term cohesion of the United Kingdom."He also met citizen and immigration minister Joe Volpe and said later: "It is very clear that Canada's positive approach to immigration has had a very beneficial effect on its population and economy."Immigration has helped Canada become a more diverse country and its economy be more competitive.
