刚从加国政府网站上看到, 11月4日联邦和各省负责移民事务的minister要在Ottawa开会, 网站并未公布会议的内容, 但从逻辑上推理, 这可能跟新的政策或者什么东西有关, 可能在会议结束之前不会有新的东西出台, 大家可以安心度过几天了. Especially since they've been promising it ever since 1993 -- in the Liberal Red Book which PM Paul Martin co-authored. Immigration Minister Joe Volpe was at it again yesterday, re-re-announcing (yes, re-re-announcing) a plan to boost immigration levels to 300,000 per year in five years. This is the same promise the Liberals first made 12 years -- and four Liberal governments -- ago. Volpe had earlier re-announced this potential 300,000 target in late September, after a speech a few days earlier by Martin to senior Ottawa mandarins. There, Mr. Dithers revealed just in time for the upcoming election -- and in a blatant appeal to ethnic voters -- that boosting immigration is again a Liberal "priority." They must be kidding. And while Volpe says a hike in immigation is needed to meet Canada's labour needs, the fact is we already have far too many foreign-trained doctors and engineers working as cab drivers because the feds, after 12 years, still haven't figured out a sensible way to recognize their credentials. Now Volpe wants to issue more temporary work visas and offer a limited amnesty to illegal workers, which is simply irresponsible in a post 9/11 world. Canada was built on immigration and we will always need immigrants to prosper. But the disaster-prone system the Liberals have saddled us with threatens our security and fails to meet our labour needs. And yet instead of fixing the system we have, the Liberals just want to make it bigger. What makes all this even more absurd is that should the Liberals win the next election, there's every reason to think, based on past experience, that they'll simply deep-six this promise again, as they have ever since 1993. Better we toss them from office and end this charade.
