Here's an extensive look at what's open, what's not and what else you need to know to survive being home for the holidays. Monday, Dec. 24th, Christmas Eve For those who like a challenge - or are just lazy - this is definitely it. The last minute, can't wait anymore, gotta get that present moment. Most stores in the GTA close at 6pm and will remain shut tight until Boxing Day madness begins early on Wednesday. Hopefully, some of what's under the tree is a bit of cash, so you can start the process of bargain hunting all over again. The TTC is running reduced afternoon peak-period service from 12pm-5pm Go Transit also has a number of changes for the day of the Eve. Find them here. Tuesday, Dec. 25th, Christmas Day It's not only a silent night but a quiet day. Some drug stores will be open for those who need emergency supplies. You can also see a show at local movie theatres, gas up your car or go out to eat at a restaurant. But shopping is off this day, with one big exception. It's business as usual at the Pacific Mall at 4300 Steeles Ave. E. near Kennedy. It's a designated tourist spot and is allowed to open on statutory holidays - which includes Christmas. Mall officials explain most of their customers aren't Christian and they don't see the need to close up shop for the day. Whether you agree with that logic or not, it's clear many people appreciated the option. Last year, the only open shopping centre in the country was packed on December 25th, and officials expect history will repeat itself in 2007. Find more information here And if you're really desperate to spend your money in a way that doesn't involve shopping, the slots at Woodbine are open 24 hours a day - including Christmas. Unlike getting your present buying done in time, in this case no bets are off. Closed Christmas Day Malls (with the exception noted above) Grocery stores and supermarkets, L.C.B.O./Beer stores, Government offices, Banks, Libraries, No mail delivery, T.T.C. on Sunday service - subways start at 9am GO on holiday schedule. Wednesday, Dec. 26th, Boxing Day Remember all those crowds you swore you'd never get involved with again on the weekend before Christmas? They're back and chances are many of you will be as well, as the stores reopen with promises of mega-bargains and loss leaders. Most will be in early and stay late to grab whatever cash you have left over. Here's a look at the schedule: Open Malls (see list below for hours) Most grocery stores and supermarkets (see list below for locations)Closed L.C.B.O./Beer stores, Government offices, Banks, Libraries, No mail delivery, T.T.C. on a Saturday schedule, with subways running at 6am GO is also on a Saturday schedule. It's important to check first to see if your store is going to be opening its doors on Boxing Day. Here are links to some of the more popular chains: Loblaws No Frills Real Canadian Superstore Dominion, A&P & Ultra-Mart Food Basics Longo's Sobey's Garbage Collection Because the holiday took place on a Tuesday, most cities in the GTA - including Toronto - have advanced collection days by 24 hours. That means if your regular pick-up was Tuesday, it will be switched to Wednesday for this week and next, with each area coming a day later than usual. Click here to see Toronto's altered sked for homeowners or consult the calendar that came in the mail. City of Vaughan Peel Region (including Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon) Richmond Hill (scroll to page 19) Dec. 27-Dec 31st It's pretty much business as usual, except a lot of us don't have to go to school or work. Everything that's normally open will stay open, although some stores may have extended hours to let you take advantage of their post-Christmas clear-outs. Tuesday, Dec. 31st, New Year's Eve Just when you thought there weren't any more reasons for revelry comes the biggest - not to mention both the first and last - party straddling two separate years. As 2007 disappears and 2008 arrives, there's plenty to do in the city, including Citytv's annual New Year's Eve Party at Nathan Phillips Square. You know the "where" but for details on the time and the guest list, click here. TTC Schedule For the first time in 30 years, the TTC is playing Edgar Winter and offering you the chance to take a "free ride" so you don't get in your car if you've had a little too much to drink. The freebie starts at midnight and runs until 4am. Subways Last trains on the Yonge-University-Spadina Subway leave Union Station at 3:32am for Finch Station and 3:36am for Downsview Station. Last trains on the Bloor-Danforth Subway leave Bloor-Yonge Station at 3:37am for Kipling Station and at 3:34am for Kennedy Station. Last train on the Scarborough RT leaves Kennedy Station at 4:04am for McCowan Station. Last train on the Sheppard Subway leaves Sheppard-Yonge Station at 3:58am for Don Mills Station. There will also be extra trips on all Blue Night routes between 3am and 4am GO Transit Refer to their website to see all their changes Other GTA systemsMississauga Transit: all buses are free on New Year's Eve from 7pm until end of service. Check your route here. Vaughan & York Region Transit: It's also free from 7pm to about 3am. See the schedule here. Brampton Transit: Free on all routes from 7:30pm-3am. Check their website for more info on routes. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 Turn out the lights - the party's over. It's New Year's Day and there are a large number of mayor's levees across the GTA. Other than that, it's pretty much like last week, with just about everything closed. Most malls (with the exceptions noted below) Grocery stores and supermarkets, L.C.B.O./Beer stores, Government offices, Banks, Libraries, No mail delivery, T.T.C. on Sunday service - subways start at 9am GO on holiday schedule. While most stores remain shut, shops in designated tourist areas are allowed to stay open on New Year's Day. That means the Eaton Centre, Vaughan Mills and the Pacific Mall will all be taking your cash, and most merchants along the Yonge St. strip will also conduct business as usual. The area runs from Richmond St. north to Grosvenor and from Bay to just east of Yonge. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008 Welcome back to reality. For many, it's back to work - although some will just take the rest of this week off, too. Everything is mostly back to normal, although the TTC expects regular crowds won't return until the following Monday, so they're running reduced peak-period service on the Yonge-University-Spadina and the Bloor-Danforth subway lines and on peak-period bus and streetcar service up to and including Friday. GO Transit riders should be okay, too, but beware of Monday, Jan. 7th - that's when a possible strike by bus drivers and other personnel could have you looking for a new way to get back to work after the extended holiday. Trains won't be affected, although picketers could try and delay things on the rails.
