俺的电子邮件原文:Dear friends,Some friends of mine are concerned about my choice between Vancouver and Toronto since I have been accepted to Ph.D. programs in both cities. For your info, I already signed the admission letter by XXX yesterday. My friends in Vancouver all hope that I will stay in Vancouver for the following reasons--1) Living in Vancouver, especially Vancouver's West End is a status symbol while living in Toronto is not.2) I already have my own circle of friends here while in Toronto I have nearly zero friends, needless to say countable, reliable friends.3) Vancouver is only 10 hours' direct flight to Beijing, and so my home feels like just next door nigh.4) Staying here saves lots of money from having to move and fly to Toronto.5) I don't have to spend time finding where Safeway, London Drugs or T&T is in a city I'm not familiar with.6) Vancouver's worst restaurant is better than Toronto's best restaurant, according to a close friend. What attracts me about Toronto is that the funding there is better, but if I take into account that I will need to fly to Beijing a lot, it should be more economical for me to fly from Vancouver instead of Toronto.Indeed, since I travel extensively between Canada and China, staying in Vancouver is probably more realistic to me. Plus my mentor and I have great chemistry. She and other faculty members are very happy that I have chosen them. What do you think?Dhawa老外回复:Sounds like you're compelled to stay in Vancouver, so if that's your decision then so be it. But I do want to set a few things straight: 1) Living in Vancouver, especially Vancouver's West End is a status symbol while living in Toronto is not. I disagree. Toronto has a lot of very prestigious neighbourhoods. However, if you were to go to York University, chances are you wouldn't be living in Toronto. You'd be in North York. York University isn't actually in Toronto. It's in a suburb that is part of the Greater Toronto Area. 2) I already have my own circle of friends here while in Toronto I have nearly zero friends, needless to say countable, reliable friends. Can't argue with you on this point. You would need to start building a new circle of friends in Toronto if you were to move here. 3) Vancouver is only 10 hours' direct flight to Beijing, and so my home feels like just next door nigh. Again, can't argue with you on this point. 4) Staying here saves lots of money from having to move and fly to Toronto. Can't argue with you on this point. However, is that really a reason? If you were to come to Toronto, wouldn't you be guaranteed funding for your research? I understand from your other emails that isn't the case with staying with SFU.5) I don't have to spend time finding where Safeway, London Drugs or T&T is in a city I'm not familiar with. Really? You're going to base your decision on that? There are plenty of drug stores and grocery stores around Toronto. It wouldn't take you long to find new places to do your shopping and run your errands. 6) Vancouver's worst restaurant is better than Toronto's best restaurant, according to a close friend. This is the point I have the biggest issue with. Toronto's restaurants rival those of New York City, so whoever your "close friend" is, they have no taste. Literally and figuratively. ;-) Dan
