On Wednesday, 11 days after the first of the deaths, Notre-Dame Hospital issued a news release at 5:06 p.m. convening journalists immediately for an announcement on “major events.” Those events were the slaying, by suffocation, of two elderly patients on different days. The first death occurred on June 16 and the second was last Thursday. An arrest has since been made, in the suspected murder attempt, although police haven’t announced a link in the cases. Police said they were alerted by hospital staff to the deaths, which were apparently first thought to be from natural causes. “We’re talking about two elderly people that died by asphyxiation,” said Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursiere. “Following the results of the autopsies of these two deaths, the case was transferred to our homicide squad. Presently concerning the two homicides, there are no arrests and the investigation is presently ongoing.” Lacoursiere was tight-lipped about further details of the deaths: “We’re going to keep to ourselves a lot of details because a lot of the family members were not advised.” Then, last Friday, police were called to the hospital after an apparent attempted murder in the psychiatric ward. Police did arrest a man in that suspected crime. A 31-year-old patient has been arrested in the attack on another patient. He has been ordered by the court to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. The man is charged with attempted murder. The survivor of the alleged attack is a 71-year-old woman. Lacoursiere said it’s not yet known whether the deaths and the attempted murder are linked.点击展开...
