Liberal MP Omar Alghabra was absent during the vote condemning boycott on IsraelOmar Alghabra (MP Mississauga Centre) who was appointed on December 2, 2015 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs), did not participate in the vote on the motion condemning the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement against Israel. The Canadian Parliament passed (February 22, 2016) a historic motion which formally condemned the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) anti-Israel movement by a vote of 229 for and 51 against. The Conservatives (including former Prime Minister Stephen Harper who attended the session to cast his vote against BDS), as well as the Liberals voted for the motion. Tom Muclair, leader of the NDP, opposed it as well as Bloc Québécois and three MPs of the Liberal Party (René Arseneault, Larry Bagnell and Nick Whalen). The motion, which was brought on November 18 by Conservative MP’s Tony Clement and Michelle Rempel, called on Canada to reject BDS.“That, given Canada and Israel share a long history of friendship as well as economic and diplomatic relations, the House reject the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which promotes the demonization and delegitimization of the State of Israel, and call upon the government to condemn any and all attempts by Canadian organizations, groups or individuals to promote the BDS movement, both here at home and abroad.”Alghabra is known of his anti-Israeli positions. During his tenure as the Chairperson of the Canadian Arab Federation, Alghabra criticized the media for portraying Fatah’s al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades as a terrorist organization, in spite of the fact that Canada officially designated this group as a terrorist entity after it carried out many hundreds of terrorist attacks, including suicide bombing attacks.During the war in summer 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah, Omar Alghabra, then Liberal MP, called on the Conservative federal government to espouse a “neutral” approach towards the conflict and to call for an immediate ceasefire followed by bringing all sides, implicitly including Hezbollah, to the negotiating table. 4 years prior to Alghabra’s statement, Hezbollah was included in Canada’s black list of terrorist organizations.BuzzFeed noted that of the 10 Muslim Liberal MPs, 8 did not vote. MP Ali Ehsassi and Minister Maryam Monsef voted for the motion.
