Halloween is coming! History of HalloweenThe Celtic festival may be the source of the present day Halloween celebration.The Celts lived over 2 000 years ago, in the United Kingdom, and northern France. Their New Year began on November 1. A festival began the previous evening, honoring Samhain, the Celtic lord of human death. The Celts believed that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return to their homes for that evening.The Druids, who were the priests and teachers of the Celts, ordered them to put out hearth fires. They would build bonfires out of oak branches which they considered sacred. They also burned animals, crops, and humans as sacrifices.People wore costumes of animal heads and skins and told fortunes about the coming year, using the remains of the animals.The Druid's festival on October 31 was a huge celebration that lasted all night.As you will notice, some of those things are very similar to the things we do on Halloween today, only the things we do are a little safer.

The Druids believed that the dead would play tricks on mankind and cause panic and destruction to the entire community and so the Druids decided to dress up in costumes of the dead and then to give offerings such as food .So now that you know some Halloween History I can tell you more about Halloween today. One of the highlights of Halloween is getting candy and unlike the Druids we do this for fun.As you may expect many small children like to dress up and go out trick or treating on Halloween night. The best part about that is seeing everyone dressed up as witches, goblins, vampires, and many more!Another one of the Halloween traditions is to carve a pumpkin and put an candle in it. All of the pumpkins are unique. Some have funny faces. Some have scary faces and some faces are just plain stupid but they are all for the same purpose, Halloween.While Halloween in the past may have been serious business Halloween today is just plain fun and I can hardly wait.评论

Halloween LegendsThe Legend of WitchesOn Hallow's Eve witches were supposed to appear flying on their broom sticks. The witches were also believed to change shape, transform others, and tell the future. In the 14th century witches were blamed for crop failures, sickness, and death, such as the "Black Death Plague". On Hallow's Eve these worshippers of the devil (who gave them powers to fly) smeared themselves with blood and the flesh of babies they had murdered! In 1450 - 1750 over two million were accused of witchcraft and killed. The usual way they killed so-called witches was by torturing them and pouring hot oil in open wounds, hanging them, or burning them at the stake.The Haunting SpiritsA ghost is a dead person's soul or spirit that is not at rest. A ghost was believed to take on a physical appearance and was able to become invisible, walk through walls etc. During the "Festival" on Halloween the spirits would return to their old homes and haunt the living. They would seek revenge for anything bad that happened in life and death. The legend of ghosts has been around since early times.The Goblin FolkloreGoblins originated in French Folklore and similar to this are the English brownies and German kobolds. They were believed to make strange, unexplained noises like rapping on walls and doors. They are found around the household and may be helpful to housewives and kids but are blamed for spilled milk or broken dishes. These supernatural creatures are ugly, mischievous, and tempermental in nature.
