June 8 , 2006 CAREER OPPORTUNITY INTERNAL/ EXTERNAL COMPETITION #06-090U Seasonal LABOURERS - (up to 11 positions pending budget approval and requirement in each business unit)Transportation & Public Works ServicesEnvironmental Management Services(various work locations)These positions encompass a wide variety of general labourer duties in various locations indoors and outdoors in various working conditions. Types of work include, such as but not limited to: sweeping streets, pick and shovel work, sod restoration, asphalt related work, traffic control , litter control, routine maintenance , internal and external painting, loading and unloading equipment and materials, and general care and maintenance of parks and grounds, while safely operating assigned tools and equipment, as well as other related duties as assigned.. By working safely and cooperatively with others you will contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM. Seasonal candidates are governed by clause 17.05B of the Collective Agreement between HRM & CUPE Local 108.QUALIFICATIONS:• Grade 12 (or equivalent combination of education and experience)• One year related experience in municipal maintenance or landscape construction and maintenance operations• Experience in asphalt or concrete work considered an asset• Must have training in Entry to Confined Spaces, CPR, First Aid ,WHMIS, Provincial Traffic Control Certification and Signage Course or willingness to obtain• A valid NS driver’s license or willingness to obtain one an asset• Must have a good attendance and work record• Must be willing to accept work related training • Must become familiar with Occupational Health & Safety practices• Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and be a team player• Ability to interact effectively with the public and internal clients• Must demonstrate effectiveness in the following competencies: communication, customer service, teamwork, achievement motivation, concern for order and quality, and diversity.The selection process will include written, oral and field/road testing if required.HOURS OF WORK : The hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., however summer weekend shifts and/or other shifts may be required as per the collective agreement.WAGE RATE : $13.47 per hour (Seasonal rate 80% of regular rate re: Halifax Civic Workers Union, CUPE Local 108 - must pay union dues)** Due to the expected number of applications, we are only able to respond to candidates who are being selected for interviews.Physical Demands- occasional to frequent -standing, walking, climb stairs, bending, squatting and reaching, occasional to frequent- lifting, pushing/pulling, carrying, of up to 50Lbs predominantly an outdoor work environmentTo apply for this position you are required to complete the new CUPE Local 108 Employment Application Form. Under the direction of a Work Supervisor or designate, responsibilities include, but are not limited to, generalized gardening and labor duties as they pertain to: all aspects of horticulture, landscape maintenance, flower/shrub bed maintenance including greenhouse assignments as required. Working outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions must be considered by interested candidates.
