I am working in a small local municipality. In my work place, I am the only one minority, and my first language is not English. As a new, I just work here for two months. Actually, I am quite happy with my position and payment. The thing happened yesterday let me realize the discremination is always there, I just ignored it before. The stroy is , yesterday, our municipality had a council meeting at night. Normally, my supervisor is doing report to councils on behalf of our department. But yesterday she did not show up in the morning, we did not know if she is coming or not . So that, I came to the fiance supervisor's office and asked her, if she knew that, because she was on phone with my supervior 2 minutes ago. She looked at me, and said : We do not expect you delivery her report tonight. I felt very bad at that moment, how come she said that to me. I never show any intends. This is just one of some cases I experiened. I can feel the discremination from many small things. I do not feel comfortable with that. What should I do? Actually, I already show my attitude to those whom not be nice to me.

I guess the reason is you are newcomer,but not you are a minority.Maybe you should come out from the details and focus on finishing your job properly.As time goes on,the real respect and coordination will be built!Good luck!

However, if I were U, I would tell the Finance Supervisor that first of all, she didnot answer my question. Secondly, tell her not to be too sensetive, I donnot expect to deliver a report on anyone's behalf. And then, leave her office, smalling.

I said to her: This is not my question, I ask it for Mary(she is our administrative assistant), then I did not attandent the meeting later. Be honest, I am not quite good at dealing with this situation, but next time, I will give it back to her.

Actually it is one of soft skills that we must learn in the office - deal with ambiguity, which includes how to deal with the conflict among colleagues. I am not good at this, my boss comments me: aggressive. But what I will keep doing is to be agreesive on biz relation, while be nice on personal relationship. I hope it works for u as well.
