Recently, many friends ask me: “How do I score above 6.5 on the Ielts?” “How can I improve my score on the speaking section?” Practice makes perfect!!! Brought to you by: David Du(雅思8.5,多伦多视觉学校教师,主讲口语写作) To some, ielts is the living nightmare; to others, it may be the motivation to learn English. Whatever perspective you have for the test, you’ll have to take it anyways, so let’s get straight down to business and unveil the “secrets” of Ielts! Before I begin talking about my strategies for every section of the test, I’d like to state how I see the Ielts. Just so that you, my reader, would know what my tactics are based on. “Secret” #1:Don’t think of Ielts as a test, see it as a way to prove to yourself and everyone else your English proficiency. “Secret” #2: Remember: 50%strategy, 50%skill. “Secret” #3:Aim higher than your ideal overall score, try to pass the first time. Listening Watch movies and listen to English songs! If you can clearly hear and understand every word Eminem raps in his songs, band 9 on Ielts listening should be a piece of cake. However, the English and sometimes Australian accent gives me a headache. No other ways but to get used to it by listening to the tapes again and again. Reading Read! Read! Read! There are basically two factors involved to getting a high mark on the reading section---your reading speed and the ability to summarize while reading. Develop a habit of English reading for at least half an hour each day. This should be a long term task. If you keep this up for a year, the Ielts shouldn’t be a problem for you. Writing For task1, memorizing basic sentence structures to describe graphs and charts should lead you to success in the short run. For task2, however, there are several steps to follow to achieve a high mark: Step1: Pay attention to common social issues, so that you could list at least 6 pros and cons of the topic given in a short period of time. Practice considering both sides of the coin before the test. If you could list three reasons for each position in three to five minutes, go on to the next step.Step2: Be familiar with the common types of structures used for task2. Choose one of them before you begin.Step3: Read a whole bunch of high-score essays and learn from their varied sentence structure and word-choice.Step4: Practice writing on your own, without models, without e-dictionaries. In my opinion, finish 15 task1’s and 15 task2’s and you are ready to go! Speaking A lot of us think speaking is the hardest part of the Ielts test. Don’t think about it that way! It’s just like chatting with a not-so-friendly friend who stares at you without blinking for 15 minutes (at least that’s what happened to me). Now, I have heard many rumors about “the band 4 old lady” and “the band 5 David” who give low marks on an average basis. Ignore that! If you can rap your answers to the examiner without any grammar mistakes, would you receive a score of lower than 8? Of course not! So try to change yourself, not others. 1. Chat with your BC teachers, what a good resource! 2. Do you feel like you have nothing to say? Example: What kinds of food do Chinese people like the most?First: Categorize your reply by: Depends on which group of people we are talking about. rich people/ poor people; young people/ old people; people in the north/ people from the south……Second: give examples (extend your reply) for each category: young people like sweets, for example, my little brother……. On the contrary, older people like traditional foods, for example, my grandfather likes……Third: summarize: so it really depends on age. This is just one of the common and useful templates used during the test. Also, you don’t have to only say the things you believe are true. Lie! Because some topics, in fact, many topics may not be in favor of you. So just quickly sketch the structure in your mind and blurt out whatever you can think of! AT LAST, GOOD LUCK TO ALL KAOYAs!
