安省约克地区警方表示，12 月 18 日大约晚上 7 点 20 分，在接到多起枪击事件的报警后，警方大批警力赶往Rutherford Road附近位于9235 Jane Street的一栋公寓楼。
警方表示有多名受害者，一名男性嫌犯。
约克地区警方负责人吉姆·麦克斯温 (Jim MacSween)表示警员一到就看到了可怕的场面，许多受害者已经死亡。
嫌犯之后在与警方交火后倒地，医护人员被叫来，这名男子在现场被宣布死亡。
警方已经通知了监管机构安省特别调查组（Special Investigations Unit），该机构目前已指派四名调查员和两名法医调查员处理此案。

案件中，有五名受害者死亡，一人被送往医院，警方预计这名伤者能够幸存下来。

旺市也向在枪案事件中的死难者家属表示了慰问，并降半旗表示哀悼。
目前，有报道称被警方击毙的疑似枪手就住在事发大楼里。
有消息人士称多名受害者是在大楼的不同单元中被发现的，是管理维利大楼的公寓委员会的成员。
据称枪案去世的人中有一位名叫 Franceso Villi 的住户与公寓委员会之间一直存在争议。
他患有慢性阻塞性肺病，并多次请求他的公寓董事会纠正有关灰尘和其他刺激物的建筑问题。
