Is French more nobler than English? Some aristocratic people used to take great pride in speaking French, even the Queen spoke French in diplamatic occassions. Looking back at the history, we find that since the Norman Conquest, the general relationship of Normans and Saxons was that of master adn servant. One of the most striking manifestations of the sumpremacy of the conquerors was to be seen in the language. The Norman lords spoke French,while their English subjects retained their old longue.For long the scholar wrote in Latin and the courtier in French.There was almost no written literature in English for a time.Chronicles and religious poems were in Latin.Romances, the prominent form of literature in the Anglo-Norman period, were at first all in French. Nowadays, with the English-spoken world growing stronger, anyone with a discerning eyes would see that French as a language just huddles in some delimited regions, like Quebec,France and some former French colonies in Afica or elsewhere. The age of French Empire is all over.
