Self-Control Inspires Trust

Trusting someone requires two ingredients. First, one must believe the person has your best interests at heart. It's hard to trust a louse (unless of course the louse is on your side). Second, one must believe the person can do what he says—one must have confidence in his competence. And an important part of competence is self-control. Skill and aligned interests aren't much good if your buddy's a flake. A new set of findings reveals not only that people can perceive others' chronic and momentary levels of self-control, but that we use this information to judge others' trustworthiness.

The paper, published in the May issue of the Journal of Personality of Social Psychology by Francesca Righetti and Catrin Finkenauer of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, reported four experiments. In the first, subjects read about a student with money problems who either resisted the urge to shop at a record store or splurged on a bunch of CD's. Then they answered questions about the student's self-control and trustworthiness. The penny-pincher received higher ratings than the spender on both counts, and ratings of trustworthiness were fully dependent on ratings of self-control.

In the second experiment, people in couples rated their partners on self-control, trustworthiness, and behaviors indicative of self-control:forgiveness, reliability, and goal achievement. The most forgiving, reliable, and successful partners (as perceived by their sweethearts) were judged to have the most self-control and to be the most trustworthy. And, after controlling for other factors, the effects that perceived forgiveness and reliability had on perceived trustworthiness could be explained by their influence on perceived self-control. If you're forgiving, that means you can handle your shit, and that means I can trust you. Subjects were also more committed to partners perceived to have high self-control, because they trusted them more.

Studies 3 and 4 tested the effects of sensing that someone had temporarily depleted self-control. Subjects were less likely to trust another person when the person had just performed a difficult task for 15 minutes versus 2 minutes. (In study 4, trust was measured by investment in one's partner during an economics game.) Again, perceived trustworthiness was influenced by perceived self-control.

"I have rarely conducted research that yielded findings that were so consistent across different types of relationships (strangers and married couples), paradigms (experimental and survey studies), and measures, " Finkenauer wrote me in an email.

If you want to improve your friendships or romantic life, Finkenauer recommends working on improving your self-control—which can be done with simple exercises. "An increasing amount of research highlights the importance of having good self-control for the development and maintenance of harmonious, long-lasting relationships, " she said. Their findings extends this research by showing that your level of self-control is on constant display, and can be used against you. Look sharp!

Wouldn’t you rather smell coffee than two-week-old leftovers, half-rotten produce and spoiled milk? If your fridge is a nightmare of foul odors, place a bowl of fresh, unused coffee grounds inside and leave it for a day or two. The coffee will absorb the odors and you’ll crave a cup whenever you open the door. This odor-killing trick works for practically anything else as well – just place the item in a sealed plastic bag along with an open can of coffee grounds and bye-bye stank.

Reduce cellulite

Pricey cellulite creams almost always have one major ingredient in common: caffeine, which supposedly enhances fat metabolism, reducing the appearance of these fatty pockets under the skin. To make your own coffee cellulite treatment at home, mix warm used coffee grounds with coconut oil and rub it onto your skin in circular motions for a few minutes before rinsing.

Erase smells on your hands

Garlic, salmon, cilantro – there are some things that smell delicious when cooking, but aren’t so pleasant hours later when they linger on your hands. Get rid of them by rubbing a handful of used coffee grounds on your hands and rinsing with warm water.

Make rich compost

There’s a reason so many gardeners swear by adding used coffee grounds to compost. The grounds are rich in phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and copper, they release nitrogen into the soil as they degrade and they’re a little bit acidic, which is great for certain soils. If you compost on a large scale, you can get used grounds for free at your local coffee hot spot or mom-and-pop cafe.

Get shiny hair

Natural dye

The natural pigments in coffee make it a great natural dye for fabric, paper, Easter eggs – even your hair. Brush paper with strong brew and let it dry, or soak fabric items in hot coffee. The results won’t be color-fast, and may bleed out onto other items, so it’s best to use this on items that won’t be washed very often if at all. Using coffee as a hair shine treatment, as previously mentioned, may temporarily lend a rich, dark tint to your hair.

Reduce fireplace mess

Want to clean your fireplace without causing a dust storm? Wait until the embers are cool, sprinkle damp coffee grounds all over the ashes , let them sit for about 15 minutes and then scoop out the whole mess into a metal ash can. The coffee grounds cling to the ashes, so they don’t spew dust nearly as much as they would otherwise.

Pin cushion filler

Dried, used coffee grounds are the perfect filler for homemade pin cushions. Just wrap them in some scrap cloth, tie it off with a rubber band and place the cloth in an egg cup or other small container. The grounds will keep your pins from rusting, too.

Exfoliate skin

The same properties that reportedly enable coffee to reduce the appearance of cellulite can smooth and tighten your skin, and the texture of ground coffee will buff away dead skin cells, too. Make your own coffee-based scrub by combining a tablespoon of coffee grounds with half a tablespoon of olive oil and, optionally, a drop of your favorite essential oil.

Repel ants

Sprinkle dry, used coffee grounds in problem areas where you notice ants in your home or yard and they might just pick up and leave. To tackle huge ant mounds, pour an entire pot of brewed coffee right on the mound.

Fertilize plants

Acid-loving plants will thank you for sprinkling your used coffee grounds around their roots. Azaleas, blueberry shrubs and rhododendrons are just a few of the plants that flourish when treated with coffee thanks to all those nutrients. You can also dilute the leftover coffee in your mug and pour it right into your potted plants (as long as you don’t use cream and sugar, of course!)

Keep cats out of your garden

To you, that little garden in your yard is a beautiful source of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, but to seemingly every cat in a five-mile radius, it’s a giant, irresistible litter box. Just use the trick mentioned above, sprinkling used coffee grounds on the soil, and cats will want nothing to do with it.

Scrub all kinds of surfaces

Mildly abrasive and acidic, coffee grounds are great for scrubbing surfaces like countertops, cooking ranges and refrigerators. Use them alone or mix them with a little dish soap.

Auto air freshener

Next time you accidentally spill coffee grounds on the floor, don’t just sweep them up and toss them in the trash. You can use them to make an all-natural DIY air freshener like this one at Instructables. Try to use an old ripped pair of pantyhose and spare string to make this an even more eco-friendly project.

Grow mushrooms

Repel fleas

Rub used, damp coffee grounds through your pet’s fur after bathing to repel fleas without questionable, likely-toxic chemical treatments. If nothing else, it will at least improve that post-bath wet-dog smell that gets all over your furniture.

Pretty vase fillers

Stale or dirty coffee beans are still a thing of beauty. Use them as vase fillers, or in cups or jars full of pens and pencils. Not only are they pretty, they continue to smell good for quite a while, too.

Start vermicomposting

Red wriggler worms, the sort used in vermicomposting systems, love coffee almost as much as we do. It’s not really clear why, but if you want a thriving community of worms to devour all of your kitchen waste (and those nasty little things really are amazingly efficient), be sure to add used coffee grounds to their bedding on a regular basis.

Secret recipe ingredient

Just a little hint of coffee can be the ingredient that becomes your undisclosed “magic touch” in foods like chili, ice cream and chocolate cake. Use a little bit as a marinade for steaks and not only will it make them unbelievably tender, it’ll also provide a hint of deep, smoky flavor.

Touch up furniture scratches

Scratches on wood furniture disappear almost instantly by simply rubbing in a little bit of instant coffee dampened into a paste with hot water. Repeat if necessary until the scratch matches the surrounding wood.

All Social Media Companies are Addicted to Fudging their User Numbers

Andrew Ross Sorkin had a good article this morning about how Facebook (FB) actually comes up with its big topline number that it now has 845 million “monthly active users.”

He points out that Facebook uses a deliberately broad definition to come up with that number.  There aren’t 845 million people who go to Facebook.com each month and log in to their account.  Rather, that is the number of people who either log in to Facebook.com or if someone “took an action to share content or activity with his or her Facebook friends or connections via a third-party Web site that is integrated with Facebook.”

Sorkin points out that there’s nothing unethical about this kind of definition.  And it’s certainly nothing like the tom-foolery we saw in the Groupon (GRPN) S-1 when the company created a new accounting metric designed to distract investors from the company’s regular GAAP earnings.

In fact, it’s even more than puffed up than what Sorkin argues.  Facebook states that it realizes that some “users” might come from people who have a Facebook app installed on their mobile phones and are programmed to automatically “ping” the Facebook servers.  However, Facebook states they do not believe these types of users are all that material.

However, the definition serves to puff up the company’s numbers and make it appear bigger than it actually is.

Facebook isn’t the only social media company to deliberately seek to puff up its member numbers.  LinkedIn (LNKD) did this in its IPO.  Zynga (ZNGA) also did.  Groupon and Angie’s List (ANGI) too.  Twitter probably does as well.

It’s all about putting your best foot forward, in order to get the maximum valuation upon IPO or to get the maximum price in a sale process.

I think most of us would say that the “real number” of Facebook monthly active users are the folks who go to the Facebook website or mobile site and read something or post something.  Those are the folks that presumably Facebook can better monetize in the future.  It would be interesting to know what percentage of 845 million people fits that simple definition.  And the same with the other social media companies.

Woman battling to get ovary back and become a mother after it was removed and frozen before cancer treatment | Mail Online
Woman who had ovary removed and frozen during battle with cancer wants it back... so she can become a mother

Changes to legislation mean she can't have ovary back

By Emily Allen

Last updated at 8:16 AM on 15th February 2012

A woman is battling to get her ovary back and have a child after it was removed and frozen before she underwent cancer treatment.

Kate Oliver, 28, from Yelverton, Devon was diagnosed with rare bone cancer Ewing’s sarcoma when she was 16.

She had a tumour the size of a melon and had her right shoulder blade removed.

Doctors told her anti cancer drugs would make her infertile so before chemotherapy she had an ovary removed and frozen at Leeds hospital.

She was given only a 40 per cent chance of survival.

She has since recovered and wants to start a family.

Changes to human tissue legislation means she is currently unable to have her ovary back.

Ms Oliver said: 'I was told at the time I had the procedure if I wanted it back all I had to do was contact them and they would get the ball rolling.

'It’s not been that easy because the laws have changed now.

'They’ve stopped doing the procedure - nobody in this country at the moment has had it done.

'In Europe and America it’s being done successfully - but not here.'

In a statement the Leeds teaching hospital NHS trust said: 'We are currently unable due to changes in the human tissue authority legislation.

'We don’t have the facilities to meet the requirements set out in the legislation.

Ms Oliver added: 'It kind of makes me angry because it’s my tissue.

'You know - and I don’t see why I should have to fight so hard to have it back.'

It’s thought that around 12 women outside the UK have given birth through this pioneering method.

Leeds Hospital said as soon as it’s in a position to proceed with treatment it will be in touch.

If Ms Oliver does get her ovary back she could be the first person in this country to have a baby using the experimental technique.

Ms Oliver, a special needs teacher, said: 'I just want my tissue back and to be given the chance to have a family.

'If it does happen it will be incredible. It’s just the waiting and not knowing.

'I feel like I’m in limbo and I don’t want to try anything else until I know whether or not I can have my own child.

'I want to try now because if this doesn’t work I want to consider other options ~ an egg donation or adoption.'

Ms Oliver, who is single, plans to use a sperm donor in order to give birth.

Before starting chemotherapy she was told it would probably make her infertile.

She was given the option of ‘ovarian tissue cryopreservation’, an experimental procedure which could enable her to have children.

She took up the offer and underwent the keyhole surgery in Leeds.

Her left ovary was removed and parts stored in 20 vials at the specialist centre, where they remain today.

Almost 10 years later, in 2009, she decided it was time to start thinking about having a child.

She contacted the Leeds Centre for Reproductive Medicine, part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, about receiving the graft which could enable her to produce eggs, or the possibility of eggs being grown from the tissue to be used in IVF treatment.

Ms Oliver attended an appointment with her consultant in February 2010 and was told it could take around six to nine months before she could undergo a procedure.

'I always knew it was going to be a long process which is why I contacted the hospital a couple of years ago, ' she said.

'When I was told six to nine months, I was really happy.

'Two years later I’m still waiting. They are trying to push it forward but I’ve been told there is still no progress as there is not a satisfactory unit in any hospital in this country to perform the procedure.'

A spokeswoman for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said they are currently unable to carry out the procedure due to changes in the Human Tissue Authority legislation, since Kate’s tissue was first stored.

Legislation which has tightened around the storage, processing and re-implantation of tissue includes Human Tissue regulations, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and the EU Tissue and Cells Directives 2007.

The Human Tissue Authority said Chapel Allerton Hospital, also part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, holds a full suite of HTA licences, including a licence for processing tissue.

Grandmother didn’t just like her coffee, and it wouldn’t really do her justice to say she loved her coffee. Grandmother was to coffee what a sommelier is to wine. She knew the intricacies of coffee, the different tastes and even the textures. And only the best would do for her. No instant coffee, or coffee bought at the grocery store. She had to have fresh coffee, from a respectable coffee shop. “The morning cup of coffee sets the tone for the whole day,” she used to say。

I used to go to Grandmother’s every Sunday morning. Her routine was always the same. She would kiss me once on each cheek, hang up my coat and lead me into the kitchen, slice a piece of banana bread right out of the oven (sometimes cranberry), and pour a cup of freshly brewed coffee。

“Alexa,” she said to me one day. “Did you know that every person’s personality is like a flavor of coffee?”

“Really?” I said, amused at how Grandmotherrelished her coffee so much that she related everything to it。

“Ye” she said. “You, my dear, are French vanilla. You are sweet, almost sickeningly so at times to the discerning coffee drinker。” I slightly recoiled at Grandmother’s assessment of me. You expect your grandmother to call you sweet, but never sickeningly sweet。

“Your father is espresso,” she continued. “He comes on strong. There are many people who don’t like him, but others can’t live without that high feeling that he gives them. He has an addictive personality that many people can’t let go of。”

“Let me gues Grandmother. You’re hazelnut。”

“Hazelnut? Why on earth would you say that?”

“Because I find your coffee talk a bit nutty。”

I smiled at Grandmother, but I could tell she was not amused. “Alexa dear, I am trying to teach you a lesson about life here. I do not need you poking fun at me。”

A lesson about life? Is she kidding? “Grandmother, you can’t dissect a person’s personality by comparing them to a cup of coffee. People are more complex than that. Everyone has nuance personality quirk things that make them different. You just can’t go around saying, ‘She’s a dark roast, he’s an instant, he’s a mocha almond。”

Grandmother looked at me, almost a blank, dull stare. “Then you just don’t understand coffee,” she snapped, clearing my plate and coffee cup from the table. “I guess not,” I sighed, exasperated at my hazelnut grandmother。

I went to Grandmother’s house many more times after that, and she always kept her same routine. It was a welcome routine, one that I enjoyed every week. Grandmother didn’t talk to me after that about the “coffee catastrophe” as I called it, but eventually, she did start to make more ridiculous claims concerning her favorite drink。

“I knew your grandfather was the right man for me because we loved our coffee the same way,” she said. “Cream with just a touch of sugar。”

I rolled my eyes. “Grandmother, many people like it that way。”

“I disagree,” she said. “For most people, if they prefer cream, they like a lot of sugar, or at least a moderate amount. Those who drink it with just a touch of sugar usually put milk in it, or drink it black。”

“So what if Papa preferred his coffee black? Or with milk and sweetener? Does that mean that you would have never married? That I wouldn’t be here today?”

“Oh don’t be silly,” Grandmother said. “I won’t think about your grandfather preferring his coffee any differently. I don’t know what would have become of us. But you, my dear Alexa, belong to me. You would be here no matter what。”

The last time I saw Grandmother was a Sunday just like all the others. I sat down at the table with Grandmother and she looked at me with a very intense look in her eyes。

“Do you ever think about heaven?” she asked me。

I stared at Grandmother and stopped chewing for a moment。

“Well, do you?” she asked again。

“Umm, not really,” I said, growing increasingly uncomfortable with this line of conversation。

“Well, I’ve been thinking about it lately,” Grandmother said. “I mean, I am getting to that age where I realize that I don’t have much more time here on earth. And I’ve just been thinking lately about heaven—and what’s there and what’s not. And I just hope that when it’s my time to leave this world, the next one has everything that I love here。”

  “And what’s that, Grandmother?”

“Good food, good people, and good coffee。”

I smiled at Grandmother’s simplicity and love for the good things in life. And I hoped that she would find exactly what she would be looking for in the next world。

Grandmother passed away later that week. They found her sitting in her favorite rocker in the living room, half a cup of freshly brewed coffee by her side. And somehow, I knew that it was a sign that everything would be all right for Grandmother。

Now, years later, I’m frequently reminded of my Grandmother. The scent of freshly baked banana bread, or the way someone will kiss me on my cheek will bring a quick flashback of her. But my memories are always most vivid when I step foot into a coffee shop, the aroma of freshly roasted beans and brewed coffee livening my senses。

“What would you like?” the person at the counter asks me。

“A medium hazelnut,” I say. “Cream with just a touch of sugar。”

1. Believe in yourself when no one else does. Lin’s only the 4th graduate from Harvard to make it to the NBA. He’s also one of only a handful of Asian-Americans to make it. He was sent by the Knicks to play for their D-League team 3 weeks ago in Erie, PA. He’d already been cut by two other NBA teams before joining the Knicks this year. You’ve got to believe in yourself, even when no one else does.

2. Seize the opportunity when it comes up. Lin got to start for the Knicks because they had to start him. They had too many injuries. Baron Davis was gone. The other point guards were out. Carmelo Anthony was injured. Amare Stoudemire had to leave the team because of a family death. Lin could have squandered the opportunity and we would have never have noticed. But he made the most of it. You never know when opportunities are going to arise in life. Often, they’re when you least expect them. Make the most of them. Don’t fritter them away.

3. Your family will always be there for you, so be there for them. It wasn’t until a few days ago that Lin got his contract guaranteed by the Knicks for the rest of the season. Before that, he could have been cut at any time. He had to sleep on his brother’s couch on the Lower East Side to get by. His family always believed in him and picked him up when he could have gotten down on himself. That made him continue to believe. If you want your family to believe in you like that, you’ve got to be there for them too when they need it.

4. Find the system that works for your style. Lin isn’t Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant. He’s not a pure scorer. He’s a passer and distributor – who can also score very well. It didn’t work for him in Golden State or Houston – where he was before landing at the Knicks. But Mike D’Antoni’s system at the Knicks has been perfect for him to show off his strengths. You’ve got to do your best to understand what your strengths are and then ensure that you’re in a system (a job or organization or industry) that is a good fit for those strengths. Otherwise, people overlook the talents you bring to the table.

5. Don’t overlook talent that might exist around you today on your team. You probably manage people at your own company today. Are you sure you don’t have a Jeremy Lin living among you now? How do you know that “Mike” couldn’t do amazing things if you gave him a new project to run with? How do you know “Sarah” isn’t the right person to take the open job in London that you’ve been talking over with your colleagues? We put people around us in boxes. He’s from Harvard. He’s Asian-American. Not sure he can play. How many assumptions have you made about talent around you? Don’t be like the General Managers in Golden State and Houston, and let talent slip through your fingers. With all their money, scouts, and testing, they didn’t have a clue what they had in their hands. Do you know what your people (or even yourself) is really capable of? Take off the blinders of assumptions you wear when you look at the world.

6. People will love you for being an original, not trying to be someone else. You’ve got to be you. You can’t be some 2nd rate copy of Michael Jordan. There will never be another Michael Jordan. Just be Jeremy Lin — yourself. Whatever that is. That doesn’t mean you don’t work hard — it just means you find what you’re good at and do it. Fans will love you for being you, just like they love Jeremy Lin. Judy Garland said it best:Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.

(Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.)

7. Stay humble. If you one day are lucky enough to have newspapers want to put you on the cover in order to sell more, don’t let it get to your head. It’s been remarkable watching how humble Lin remains through all this media frenzy. It makes his teammates and fans love him that much more.

8. When you make others around you look good, they will love you forever. I didn’t know how good Tyson Chandler was, until I saw him playing with Jeremy Lin. Lin has set Chandler up many times over the last week for easy dunks because he drew the defense and then passed the ball. That’s partly why the Knicks are playing so well. They are all working harder to share the ball with others. And it’s beautiful to watch. And when the media swarms Lin, he tells them how good his teammates are. Do the same with your peers and reports.

9. Never forget about the importance of luck or fate in life. Some people believe in God, some in destiny, some in luck. Whatever you believe in, be grateful for it.

10. Work your butt off. Lin couldn’t have seized his opportunity if he hadn’t worked like crazy for years perfecting his skills. There are no short cuts to hard work. Success is a by product of that. If you’ve got a Tiger Mom who’s always pushed you to work hard, great. If not, let your conscience be your own Tiger Mom! Get up early, stay up late. Nobody gave Lin any free passes. Why should you get any? You can only control what you control and that means you’ve got to work harder than anyone else you know.

Most healthy people should aim for at least 30 minutes, five times a week, of moderately intense activity such as brisk walking, plus 10 to 15 minutes or so of strength-training (digging in your garden counts) 2 or 3 days a week. This is enough exercise to help you lower your risk for health conditions like high blood pressure, stroke, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, and osteoporosis, and to prevent the natural loss of muscle mass that slows metabolism and contributes to weight gain in your thirties, forties, fifties, and beyond.

If you’re trying to lose weight, more activity is better. An hour or even 90 minutes of moderate exercise, or 1/2 hour of vigorous activity such as jogging, strenuous aerobics, or fast-paced cycling, is ideal. Of course, anything you do is better than nothing, and consistency counts. Fitting in 30 minutes most days of the week, even in 10-minute bursts, is better than playing the weekend warrior by overdoing it once or twice a week.

If you’re the type that just doesn’t enjoy going to the gym or using a treadmill, choose an activity you enjoy that you can do for 10 to 30 minutes or longer and that raises your heart rate. This could be dancing, playing tennis, chopping enough wood to heat your house for the winter, or lining up strenuous yard work or housework that feels like a workout.

The NBA*s hottest basketball player pushed the world*s most captivating sports story to another level Tuesday night, hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a second left on the clock to propel the New York Knicks to their sixth victory in as many games and prompt a flurry of speculation, even in China, about whether God had eclipsed director Spike Lee as the Knicks* biggest fan.

※Amen!§ one Chinese fan wrote in response to Jeremy Lin*s latest heroics on the popular Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo, where Lin now has close to a million followers. ※This is God playing basketball.§

Whether there*s some higher power helping Lin 岸 a devout Christian 岸 is a question that may never be answered. There is, however, a more mundane question to be asked: What does Lin*s inspired play mean for the NBA*s business in China?

※Our goal right now is to do everything possible to work with our partners to capitalize on [Lin*s emergence],§ David Shoemaker, head of the NBA*s China operations, told China Real Time minutes before Lin helped the Knicks secure their latest win.

The NBA, which once hoped to develop a new league in China, has struggled in the world*s second-largest economy since injuries ended the career of Chinese star Yao Ming.

During the 2009-10 season, in which Yao played only a handful of games before suffering the injury that would prompt him to retire, the NBA*s TV ratings in China hit their lowest point since Yao entered the league in 2002, according to local media. Meanwhile, efforts to open a network of NBA-branded stores have stalled and talk of an NBA league in China has died down. (China has its own professional league, the Chinese Basketball Association, with 17 teams in 10 provinces as well as Beijing and Shanghai)

Mr. Shoemaker noted that the NBA*s ratings have rebounded recently, increasing 39% over last year even before Lin 岸 the American-born son of Taiwanese immigrants 岸 started turning heads last week. He also rejected the notion that the 6-foot-3-inch Lin could fill 7-foot-6-inch Yao*s shoes.

※I would say no one of Chinese descent could ever replace Yao,§ the executive said of the eight-time All-Star. ※Six games in, it*s unfair to Jeremy to burden him with the weight of that comparison.§

Yet many observers, including Mr. Shoemaker, argue that Lin has an appeal in China that Yao didn't have. A human-sized star, he's easier for Chinese basketball players to relate to.

One measure of Lin's appeal in China: According to the NBA, last Friday's game between the Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers --- a contest in which Lin scored 38 points while outplaying Lakers' star Kobe Bryant --- set a viewership record for live programming on China's Sina web portal, which has a live streaming agreement with the NBA. The NBA declined to reveal specific traffic numbers for the game.

Though TV schedules were long ago set, Mr. Shoemaker said the NBA is working with Chinese-language TV stations, as well as web portals like Sina, to add individual Knicks games. Taiwan's Elta TV, for example, aired Tuesday's contest against the Toronto Raptors.

The NBA is also 'doing everything possible' to meet 'furious' demand for Lin and Knicks merchandise in China, Mr. Shoemaker said. While the NBA has succeeded in opening only two branded stores in China, it also distributes official merchandise through 2,200 Adidas outlets across the country, as well as through an online store.

Lin is in a good position to cash in personally on his newfound popularity in China. Numerous current and former NBA players, including the Lakers' Bryant and former Knick Stephon Marbury, have found a lucrative sideline in marketing apparel to Chinese basketball fans.

Lin, who told the New York Daily News that he is in frequent contact with Yao, is no doubt aware of the opportunities available in the world's most populous country. Indeed, ESPN writer Rick Reilly reported on Twitter after Tuesday's game that the second-year player had been considering playing in China before his stunning breakthrough last week.

No doubt the Chinese Basketball Association would welcome Lin should his Cinderella story in the NBA come to an early end, though with last night's performance, it's appearing increasingly likely that the 23-year-old -- and his considerable marketing potential -- will be hanging around the American league for a while.
