customer指顾客，客户，一般用于商业交易中。client它也有顾客的意思，但另外还有“委托人”“当事人的意思”。
其实指客户时customer和client是可以通用的。

如果是商品, 更多是用CUSTOMER
如果是服务, 可能更多用CLIENT

A customer = person who buys goods or a service. 一次性购买商品或服务的人，顾客/消费者。
A client= a person who receives services. 接受服务的人，客户。
著名的麦肯锡咨询公司的创始人鲍尔说：“我们没有顾客（customer），我们只有客户（client）。”
一般说来，专业服务（包括律师、会计师、建筑师、广告代理、管理咨询等）的使用者，被称作客户；而普通的商品和服务的使用者，被称为顾客。
显然，专业服务提供者跟客户之间的关系，比普通的厂商跟顾客之间的关系，要更深厚、更紧密。权威的Merriam-Webster词典对“客户”的第一个释义是“在另一个人保护之下的人”，对“顾客”的第一个释义是“购买一种商品或服务的人”。
比较这两个定义，更能看出：客户和顾客的本质不同，不在于使用的是否是专业服务，而在于——你跟客户的关系，是你照料和保护他的利益；而你跟顾客的关系，只是你把东西（不管是产品还是服务）卖给了他。

I know an IPR firm which help its clients investigate IPR infringement and take legal action against the infringers. Apparently, the clients are different from customers who usu. have no clientage with others.有区别。我曾来根本不知到。自己的母语也有学习的！

Some people use the words “client” and “customer” interchangeably or generically. I’d like you to think a little about these important words because there is a significant difference – one that can have huge impact upon your long-term business.
According to Merriam-Webster:
Client: One that is under the protection of another
Customer: One that purchases a commodity or service
Here’s the distinction:
In a client / vendor relationship, the buyer is “under the protection” of the vendor and becomes dependent upon the ongoing care of the vendor.

Sure.
The term "client" is used where there is an ongoing relationship where the client receives services that work in his or her best interest. An example would be a lawyer. A client sees a lawyer to be represented in a legal matter. The outcome is to protect the client's best interests.
The term "customer" is used to describe a transactor, one who engages in a an exchange of goods or services. Even if there are multiple transactions, the purpose of the relationship is to merely convey goods or services to one another.
Thinking about your business, do you want more clients? more customers? or both? The answer really depends on what goals you have. In many cases it makes the most sense (profit) to just simply have customers. In other cases, you can attain greater profitability through stronger value added client relationships.
