Ten Principles of Business Leadership
While thumbing through some of my resource files today, I ran across these ten business leadership principles. I hadn't read them in several years and had forgotten how powerful and timeless they are. I hope you enjoy them, too.
1. Business success depends on just one thing: Constantly adding value to our customer's enterprises or their quality of life in their eyes. If our business isn't succeeding, look in this area for the answers.
2. We must be able to state in one clear sentence what our business provides and for whom. In a second clear sentence, we must be able to state how we do this better than our competitors.
3. We must have the courage to see ourselves -- and our business -- as others do.
4. Successful business leaders believe the numbers and take accountability for changing them.
5. Successful business leaders understand cause and effect. If they want a different result, they seek a different approach.
6. We all know that the only constant in business is change. Successful leaders find the opportunity, not the problem, in each of these things.
7. Successful leaders view every conflict, even crises, as an opportunity to create a win-win breakthrough.
8. Businesses and business leaders sustain success by MAKING LONG TERM COMMITMENTS to their communities, suppliers, customers and employees by treating them as respected, voluntary partners. Long term commitments improve the quality of our decisions and the integrity of the promises we make to one another.
9. Nothing left uncontrolled gets better. But we must conserve our energy and remember, we don't have to accept every challenge.
10. Team success is much more powerful than individual success, and much harder to achieve.

While thumbing through some of my resource files today, I ran across these ten business leadership principles. I hadn't read them in several years and had forgotten how powerful and timeless they are. I hope you enjoy them, too.

1. Business success depends on just one thing: Constantly adding value to

While thumbing through some of my resource files today, I ran across these ten business leadership principles. I hadn't read them in several years and had forgotten how powerful and timeless they are. I hope you enjoy them, too.

ten business leadership principles. I hadn't read them in several years and
had forgotten how powerful and timeless they are. I hope you enjoy them,
too.
今天我在翻阅我的“秘籍”资料时,无意中发现了这十条法则。我已经好几年没有去翻
阅这些法则,都忘了它们实际上有着恒久的威力。希望你们也同样受用。
(意思虽然是对了,但是没组织好用词)
1. Business success depends on just one thing: Constantly adding value to
our customer's enterprises or their quality of life in their eyes. If our
business isn't succeeding, look in this area for the answers.
1. 在生意场上要成功,唯一的关键在于要不断地增加我们客户企业的利益(利益是他
们眼中的“基本生活条件”)。如果现在我们的业绩不好,就要从这方面找答案。
[即:如果我们业绩不好,有可能是因为我们本身没有为我们的客户创造和添加足够的
利益。]
(or their quality of life in their eyes这句话好象没翻译出来)
2. We must be able to state in one clear sentence what our business provides
and for whom. In a second clear sentence, we must be able to state how we do
this better than our competitors.
2. 我们必须要能用有一句简明的话说明我们所在的行业能提供些什么以及为谁提供。
还要能用第二句简明的话说明我们怎样比我们的对手做得更好。
(“提供些什么以及为谁提供”这句话翻译的很好,要远比“为谁提供些什么”
生动。但是我觉得第二句话翻译的不好,罗嗦的很,意思表达不清)

(这句话好多人都象你这样翻译的,但是有个问题,不知道你有没有觉得这样说
可能产生歧义呢?是象别人一样对自我审视还是用别人的眼光来看自己?)

4. 成功的商界领导人相信数字(销售额),并尽责地去改变(提高)这些数字(销售
额)。
(这句话的意思基本出来了。但是第二句话翻译的不好,不是“尽责”的去改变
数字,而是“以改变数字为己任”,意思还是有不同的)
5. Successful business leaders understand cause and effect. If they want a
different result, they seek a different approach.
5. 成功的商界领导人深谙因果关系。他们若想要不同的结果,就会寻找不同的途径。
(这句话好多人也是象你这样翻译的,但我也觉得不好。“深谙因果关系”这句话
太模糊了,搞的别人一头雾水。深谙什么因果关系?上下文没有交代,也无法交代。
第二句话也是生搬硬套,让人读了以后根本不知道你想表达什么。想要不同的结果
可不就是要寻找不同的途径么?别说老板了,你、我、普通人都是这样做的呀!
所以不能严格照字面翻译。这种“十大法则”类似于名言警句,应该通俗易懂,如果
搞的很晦涩,那么即使别人看懂了,效果也大打折扣,你说呢?)

总能发现机遇,而不是问题。
(第一句话没什么问题,但是感觉还罗嗦。第二句话就有毛病了,好象又有歧义。
而且好象又有好多人也是象你这样翻译的。第一种意思应该是,成功的领导人能力
强,在商场中如鱼得水,没有问题,强调的是成功的领导人能力强,这有
“拍马屁”的嫌疑。第二种意思应该是说成功的领导人在商场中眼睛盯的是
“机遇”而不是“问题”,这也是原文的意思,所以这个地方要改一下)。

7. 成功的领导人把每一场冲突,每一次危机,都当作是创造突破性双赢局面的机遇。
(这句话基本没什么问题,但是“突破性双赢局面”这种说法好象有问题,应该把
语序掉一下,应该是“创造双赢局面的突破口”

当作理所当然的值得尊重的合作伙伴,一直的对他们负责。这种一直的负责可以使我们
对相互之间作出更好的决定和更实际的承诺。
(这句话比较长,也是问题最多的一句。但是我个人认为“保持成功”这样说法不太好
尽管完全正确,但是我们日常生活中几乎不这样说,单独使用“成功”就行了。当然这样
翻译完全正确,完全符合原文意思。但是你不“MAKING LONG TERM COMMITMENTS”翻译
成对……负责,我不太赞成。这里by “MAKING LONG TERMCOMMITMENTS” 和后面的
by treating them as respected, voluntary partners.是可以划等号的,那你
能说“对待他们如自由的合作伙伴”是“对他们负责”吗?这个明显说不通!
第二句话你说看不懂,我试着解析一下:“Long term commitments”和
“by treating them as respected, voluntary partners.”是一个意思对吧?
就是说通过长期的、谨慎的,尊重、对待产业链的每一环,可以提高我们的决策
水平(因为不会再有任何随便、马虎的态度对待任何事情),所谓“承诺的完整性”
也是因为对待产业链的每一环都是“voluntary partners”。 如果A=B,C=B那么
很显然A=C,所以我们在“make promises to one another”的时候,就不会存在
厚此薄彼的情况了,当然这是我的理解,如果有错误请不吝赐教)

9. 如果什么都不管的话,一切都不会改善。但我们必须保留一些精力,并记住我们并不是非得接受所有的挑战。[意思应该是说:如果对任何事情都不采取行动的话,事情就不会好转,但是我们又不需要凡事都去做,应该保留一些精力,有所为有所不为?]
(第一句话是个双重否定句,意思很简单,但是要是直译的话挺麻烦,因为中国人没有这样
说话的。第二句话字面上的意思是,要记住:有时候我们要高挂“免战牌”,要
省点力气。为什么要“免战”呢?为什么要省力气呢?结合第一句,
如果放任事态不管的话,事情不会得到改善。后面用一个“But”,表示转折,
前面表示要管,后面转折肯定就是不要管,为什么不要管呢?
这个答案应该是在“we don't have to accept every challenge.”里面。这句话也不是成语,
直译就是“我们不可能去接受所有的挑战”
主句是要去“要去解决所有问题”,从句却又说“我们不可能接手所有问题”,这就形成了一个条件
状语从句。那么什么时候这个条件成立呢?从“ conserve our energy”保留力气可知,如果浪费
力气了这个条件就成立了。就是说“如果浪费力气了,去解决问题还不如不去解决”。那么什么时候浪费力气呢? 根据经验(公理、脑筋急转弯)可得:方法不对!)

(看了好多人的翻译,都觉得不够味道。)

你的水平很不错,而且比较敢言。 确实,我选择的这篇比较麻烦,很多话即使理解了,也未必能够很好地翻译成精练、经典、有力的中文语句。 何况,对大部分没有好好经历过、反思过自己创业、领导和管理公司团队的福友们,甚至都比较难以真正理解其微言大义。 所以,应该说是我的选择错误,抱歉。
顺便问一下,各位知道哪里有比较好的创业论坛?我想去看看,是否可以提供类似的翻译学习讨论的栏目。[其实本人的相对最强项应该是讨论如何创业(从几千/几万起家,发展成大企业)、如何让企业有突破性的成长(销售/营销之翻倍/成倍成长)、如何建立系统化、科学化、人性化的管理体系(企业的基业长青、永续发展),等等课题。]

谢谢银路同学和布鲁斯老师的点评(我怎么也学Bruce老师翻译名字了 ),每次翻译我基本上是不打稿,有时候编辑也只是改之前打的错别字,所以一气呵成后再回头看自己的翻译,自己也觉得有粗糙和不足之处,不过不去改卷而已。不改自己卷子的结果看来还不错,因为得到两位精彩的评注,有些豁然开朗的感觉。
另外,对Bruce老师在第8点评讲举的那个反例,我也很有同感。不是Business leader的我,一直的工作努力的重要目标之一就是不做a replaceable machine part,哪怕只是个小零件,也要让自己是最valuable的不易取代的一个。就像早期Art通讯有一期说的,要做那个在工作上很多人都想有你在旁的人。不行了。。崩溃。。。
完全看不懂。。。

这段话要用中文表达清楚,还是相当地困难。前面我的翻译也比较模糊,现在让我再试译一次:

(Bruce老师这种说法另辟蹊径,高明的很,但是挑剔一点说,有些用词需要改进,比如“获得知识”和“愚昧无知”这个地方就显得不太协调。虽然获得知识和接受教育意思差不多,但是用在这里还是有区别的。教育费用昂贵是人尽皆知的事,但是“获得知识”这个概念就小的多,而且具体的多,如果你身边的同事跟你说“现在的教育费用太高了”你马上会连连点头称是,但是如果你的同事说“现在获得知识的费用太高了”那么你就会觉得怪怪的,什么知识?打球知识?下棋知识?还是书本知识?另外“所费不赀”这个成语用在这里也太扎眼了,跟后面的文风显得格格不入。“愚昧无知”不如“蒙昧无知”,“却会有”可以改为“才会招致”,我觉得“昂贵”的损失用在这里不太合适,一个是这两个词很少搭配,二是“昂贵”本身就是书面用语,这里还是接近口语比较贴切,容易让人产生共鸣。所以我冒昧的替您改一下:您可能认为接受教育花费甚巨,其实蒙昧无知才会招致更大损失。)

and for whom. In a second clear sentence, we must be able to state how we do
this better than our competitors.
2. 我们必须要能用有一句简明的话说明我们所在的行业能提供些什么以及为谁提供。还要能用第二句简明的话说明我们怎样比我们的对手做得更好。
我们必须能用一句话清楚的说明我们能提供什么?为谁提供?第二句话,怎样才能做得比我们的竞争对手好。
2. 我们必须要能在一句简明的话中就可以表明我们企业所能提供的服务以及所服务的对象。还要能通过第二句简明的话表明我们怎样比我们的对手做得更出色。

(Bruce老师的这句理解好象有问题。既然Bruce老师没看懂,我相信绝大多数人都没看懂。所以再次恬然的谈一谈自己的愚见。首先要确定的是这句话的立论点应该是:“商界领袖十大黄金法则”即所谓的“怎样成为一个成功的老板”。第一个分句字面上的意思是
:成功的老板知道事情的前因后果。但从这一句话根本看出怎样才能成为一个成功的老板。你会说:“我就是普通人,我看不出什么前因后果,所以我就不能成为成功的老板”。很显然这样的论据是与立论背道而驰的。如果以第一个分句为分论点的话,那么第二个分句就是解释这个分论点的论据。那么第二个分句又是什么意思呢?字面上的意思是说:如果他们(成功的老板)想要一个不同的结果,他们就会寻找一个不同的方法。这句话的字面意思跟第一个分句也没有什么必然联系,跟“怎样做一个成功的老板”也看不出有什么必然联系。如果你不知道A=B,但是你知道A=C,所以你就可以通过证明B=C,来得到A=B。我们再回过头来看第二个分句“If they want a different result, they seek a different approach.”。这句话用来证明第一个分句的论点的,而第一个分句是用来说明“怎样做一个成功的
老板”的,所以,第二个分句也是可以用来证明“怎样做一个成功的老板的”。所以,如果我是本书的作者,面对面的教你“怎样做一个成功的老板”,我就会这样跟你说:“You want a different result, you seek a different approach”,我会跟你说这样才是做事之道。那么这句话又是什么呢?举个例子说明:有一天,我
跑到老板办公室说:“老板,你把华南片区都分给小明了,而我都是华东片区,我这边客户少的很,我今年肯定完不成任务了,我想换一换。”那么老板就会说:“不行,就这么定了,‘You want a different result, you seek a different approach’,你要想有不同的结果,就自己想办法”。所以,第二个分句的意思就
出来了。“当他们想达成一个(不同)结果时,就会自己想办法”。那么第二个分句和第一个分句间的逻辑关系又是什么呢?很显然,第二个分句是证明第一个分句的,“当老板的知道前因后果”。为什么呢?因为“他们想要一个结果的时候,就会自己想办法(原因)”。所以这里的“前因后果”如果直译是很不好的,它不能让读者立刻明白作者想说什么。事实上,这里cause and effect可以说成“why” and “how”,把第二个分句的内容提前,说明老板知道“分析原因”,所谓“know why(cause)”,和“解决问题”,所谓的“know how(effect)”,这样“怎样做一个成功的老板”才顺理成章。这句话连起来就是:“成功的老板知道分析原因,
解决问题,遇到不同的问题就会寻找不同的方法”。不知道我这样罗嗦,你们是不是嫌烦。象个唐僧!

(Bruce老师,您的第二次翻译我也看了,感觉还是有问题。首先说“持续成功”这个地方,汉语中“成功”应该是短暂性动作,“持续成功”就会让人感觉到怪怪的。如果一定要把“持续”翻译出来的话,你看用“保住胜利果实”怎么样?还有一个重要的地方“one another”大家都翻译成了“彼此”,我觉得这个地方翻译成彼此是不对的,这个“one another”是不包括自己的,是不同于“each other”的,如果要翻译成“一个又一个”可能更贴切一些。逻辑上更说不过去。你尊重他人了不代表他人也尊重你啊。就好象日本的企业在中国很有礼貌但是不代表受到礼遇的中国的企业“一定”会还之于“礼貌”啊,哪有“相互”的“决策”和“相互”的“承诺”呢?最后的结果是日本的企业“成功”了,而中国的企业还在挣扎!

[完全接受银路的上述批评。其实,本文的每一句都值得商榷。首先,是对原文的理解上,恐怕大家都会见仁见智,尤其是对作者的字里行间的含义,肯定会有不同的解读。其次,在中文层面,我们的选择又可以五花八门。我的选择如下:
1) 偏向书面体系的文字风格;(好处,符合原文的风格;坏处,文字冲击力不够)
2) 尽可能保持原文的句子形式;(好处,便于对照原文;坏处,欧化拗口)
3) 不延伸原文意思,或仅仅轻微透露原文的引申含义;(好处,便于保留原文;坏处,僵化难懂)
如果就翻译论翻译,把原意表达强烈,这一句可以修改如下:
一般人都以为教育费用昂贵,其实正是由于愚昧无知你才赚不到钱。(愚昧=>你不花钱受我教育)
我不用“招致损失”是因为它在中文里是未来时态/虚拟语态,而原文其实强调的是现在发生的事情:is costing you。。。]

修改:成功的企业只有一种:坚持不逾地、按客户的要求,给客户企业带来效益,为用户生活提升品质。如果我们的企业经营不善,请在此领域寻找问题。[这里强调“按客户的要求”是呼应了作者的第三条]
2. We must be able to state in one clear sentence what our business provides
and for whom. In a second clear sentence, we must be able to state how we do
this better than our competitors.
我们必须能用一句话清楚的说明我们能提供什么?为谁提供?第二句话,怎样才能做得比我们的竞争对手好。
我们务必只用一句话来清晰表明:我们是在为谁提供什么服务或产品。随后务必只用一句话再来明白阐述:我们如何比竞争对手做得更出色。

3. We must have the courage to see ourselves -- and our business – as others do.

[对比“看”字,审视和反省都是书面语。用“反省”,一是避免重复用“审视”;二是阐发原文里的一种自我批评的态度。]
4. Successful business leaders believe the numbers and take accountability
for changing them.
对成功的老板来说,老板改变数字,数字说明一切。
成功的商界领袖相信数字表现说明一切,并且肩负起改善的责任。
(Bruce老师这一句中规中距,但是“表现”一词多余,“数字说明一切”已经成习语了。“改善”这个词不好,不能说“改善”数字,只能说“改变”数字。)
[这句的英文原文确实是有点让人误入歧途。我按我的理解,加上“表现”一词加以模糊化,并且以“改善”来对应“表现”。我在这里竭力想避免的是,“白猫黑猫论”这种极端实用主义的论调。我觉得作者应该不会坚持“猫论”,请参考作者第八条的观点。]
5. Successful business leaders understand cause and effect. If they want a
different result, they seek a different approach.
成功的老板知道“为什么?”和“怎么办?”。他们总是能通过各种方法达成目标。
成功的商界领袖深谙前因和后果。若要完善结果,就要找出问题原因和解决方法。
(Bruce老师的这句理解好象有问题。既然Bruce老师没看懂,我相信绝大多数人都没看懂。所以再次恬然的谈一谈自己的愚见。首先要确定的是这句话的立论点应该是:“商界领袖十大黄金法则”即所谓的“怎样成为一个成功的老板”。第一个分句字面上的意思是:成功的老板知道事情的前因后果。但从这一句话根本看出怎样才能成为一个成功的老板。你会说:“我就是普通人,我看不出什么前因后果,所以我就不能成为成功的老板”。很显然这样的论据是与立论背道而驰的。如果以第一个分句为分论点的话,那么第二个分句就是解释这个分论点的论据。那么第二个分句又是什么意思呢?字面上的意思是说:如果他们(成功的老板)想要一个不同的结果,他们就会寻找一个不同的方法。这句话的字面意思跟第一个分句也没有什么必然联系,跟“怎样做一个成功的老板”也看不出有什么必然联系。如果你不知道A=B,但是你知道A=C,所以你就可以通过证明B=C,来得到A=B。我们再回过头来看第二个分句“If they want a different result, they seek a different approach.”。这句话用来证明第一个分句的论点的,而第一个分句是用来说明“怎样做一个成功的老板”的,所以,第二个分句也是可以用来证明“怎样做一个成功的老板的”。所以,如果我是本书的作者,面对面的教你“怎样做一个成功的老板”,我就会这样跟你说:“You want a different result, you seek a different approach”,我会跟你说这样才是做事之道。那么这句话又是什么呢?举个例子说明:有一天,我跑到老板办公室说:“老板,你把华南片区都分给小明了,而我都是华东片区,我这边客户少的很,我今年肯定完不成任务了,我想换一换。”那么老板就会说:“不行,就这么定了,‘You want a different result, you seek a different approach’,你要想有不同的结果,就自己想办法”。所以,第二个分句的意思就出来了。“当他们想达成一个(不同)结果时,就会自己想办法”。那么第二个分句和第一个分句间的逻辑关系又是什么呢?很显然,第二个分句是证明第一个分句的,“当老板的知道前因后果”。为什么呢?因为“他们想要一个结果的时候,就会自己想办法(原因)”。所以这里的“前因后果”如果直译是很不好的,它不能让读者立刻明白作者想说什么。事实上,这里cause and effect可以说成“why” and “how”,把第二个分句的内容提前,说明老板知道“分析原因”,所谓“know why(cause)”,和“解决问题”,所谓的“know how(effect)”,这样“怎样做一个成功的老板”才顺理成章。这句话连起来就是:“成功的老板知道分析原因,解决问题,遇到不同的问题就会寻找不同的方法”。不知道我这样罗嗦,你们是不是嫌烦。象个唐僧!
[哈哈,你真的是唐僧吗?那我只给你一句话真经:除了某某党,这个世界上没有任何人可以“总是能通过各种方法达成目标”。]
[“成功的老板知道分析原因,解决问题,遇到不同的问题就会寻找不同的方法。”是原文的一部分含义。更重要的是:领袖要追求卓越的结果,主动去尝试新的道路(seek a different approach)。这里其实强调的是主动,而不是在遇到问题之后。]

improve the quality of our decisions and the integrity of the promises we

(Bruce老师,您的第二次翻译我也看了,感觉还是有问题。首先说“持续成功”这个地方,汉语中“成功”应该是短暂性动作,“持续成功”就会让人感觉到怪怪的。如果一定要把“持续”翻译出来的话,你看用“保住胜利果实”怎么样?还有一个重要的地方“one another”大家都翻译成了“彼此”,我觉得这个地方翻译成彼此是不对的,这个“one another”是不包括自己的,是不同于“each other”的,如果要翻译成“一个又一个”可能更贴切一些。逻辑上更说不过去。你尊重他人了不代表他人也尊重你啊。就好象日本的企业在中国很有礼貌但是不代表受到礼遇的中国的企业“一定”会还之于“礼貌”啊,哪有“相互”的“决策”和“相互”的“承诺”呢?最后的结果是日本的企业“成功”了,而中国的企业还在挣扎!

(Bruce老师,感觉这句还有问题,虽然意思对了,但是有点似是而非的感觉,因为分句之间逻辑性不强。第一个分句照原文用了双重否定,但是选词造句上有些突兀。第二个分句“但是我们必须集中精力”也显得很突兀,既没有说明为什么,也没有其他分句来支持,孤零零的一个光杆司令立在那里。不过,按理说,“无厘头”正是汉语的风格,这样说才地道!但是如果这里这样翻译出来就显得说教的味道太重了,和全篇循循善诱的风格相差太远。)
[同意,你的翻译确实翻译出了原文的“无为而治”那一方面的深刻含意。不过,我的翻译保留了原文的大部分结构和用词,发挥得不多。毕竟我们这里是学习为主,所以尽可能保留原文的结构和用词,避免过于发挥。其实,由于本文作者的写作风格完全不同,所以我已经有很多发挥在内了。所幸,我们还是会马上回到ART的课堂,用故事和实际事例来说明问题,避免过于抽象的说法 – 那怕是很好和很经典的说法。因为经典也很容易有误导和误用的危险。]
10. Team success is much more powerful than individual success, and much
harder to achieve.

嘿嘿,因为布鲁斯老师是老师嘛,所以做学生的有时候就吹毛求疵了。布鲁斯老师的讲解还是很精彩的,但是有一点银路还是很 不服气:
最后一句话您的翻译明显是悖论啊:
团队成功的功效远远大过单枪独斗。当然,争取团队成功需要领袖倍加努力。
(嘿嘿,布鲁斯老师可能是领导做惯了,颜色也要加上政治色彩,用红色是我的个人喜好,不传达任何其他信息 )
请问“领袖倍加努力”得到的成功算是个人成功还是“团队成功”,既然强调“团队精神”还需要再突出“个人领导”吗? 我觉得您还是没能理解作者的大义微言。成功的企业并不是说它的老板多有本事,而是它的员工的凝聚力,奉献度。 老板再努力只是老板一个人的事,他不能代表集体。
另外,我不同意您把翻译中的“意译”理解成发挥。诚然,如果“意译”的不好,在别人看来就是“发挥”了,但是如果真的把“意译”当做是“发挥”就失之偏颇了。“意译”应该严格按照原文的意思,“发挥”则带上自己的感情色彩了。我们应该避免主动的发挥,尽量减少被动的“发挥”。所以我认为“商业领导者的十项黄金法则”第八条同样适用于翻译这个行当。

While thumbing through some of my resource files today, I ran across these ten business leadership principles. I hadn't read them in several years and had forgotten how powerful and timeless they are. I hope you enjoy them, too.
